Saint Jerome's Relevance to Today
Saint Jerome has made a great impact on the Catholic faith. This Doctor of the Church has done many tasks and deeds to contribute to the service of God. For example, he translated the entire Bible into Latin, which was used for over a thousand years. The Saint Jerome’s Latin language translation of the Bible came to be known as the Latin Vulgate. One of the most daunting, tiring, and difficult tasks a person can undertake is translating one language to another language. But, through the inspiration of God and the Holy Spirit, Saint Jerome translated the entire Bible into Latin. Not only did he translated the entire Bible into Latin, he was also a theologian and historian, and his work in theology is what made him earn the title “Doctor of the Church.” He is one of the many people that made the Catholic Church into what it is today.
The reason why Saint Jerome is relevant today is because he is responsible for having translating the Bible to Latin. It is relevant because the Bible is the most published book in the world, and for Saint Jerome having translated the Bible into Latin, in turn, he enabled others to translating the Bible into the languages we know today easier rather than other, more recent scholars translating it, since the three original languages of the Bible are so ancient that it would be a difficult task. The Latin Vulgate, or Saint Jerome’s Latin translation of the Bible, has been used in the Catholic Church for thousands of years and sparked and began many other translations of the Bible in many of the languages that are used in modern day to enable others of a different language to read the Bible. Saint Jerome is also relevant today through the work of librarians, since he is the patron saint of librarians. We go to libraries every day for information. His connection to librarians makes him relevant today.
When learning that Saint Jerome is the patron saint of students, scholars, and librarians, it is reasonable for me and other students to pray to this saint today. His work on theology and considering that he became a Doctor of the Church is what makes him the patron saint of students, scholars, and librarians. For me, I can pray to this saint in times of academic difficulty and hardship, and I believe others currently being educated can pray to him too. Saint Jerome is someone that I could look up to or pray to for academic excellence and guidance. Furthermore, I chose this saint because he, as I mentioned earlier, took on the task of translating the entire Bible into Latin under the guidance of God and the Holy Spirit, and that alone just shows me his immense devotion and faith to God. Another reason why I chose Saint Jerome is because he is, in addition, the patron saint of students and scholars. I am definitely a student and consider myself a scholar, and it would be nice to pray to a saint that had a profession of theology and history. As I mentioned earlier, in choosing this saint, I could pray to him for academic excellence and guidance.
From this assignment, I learned about Saint Jerome, the patron saint of librarians, scholars, and students. Also importantly, what I can learn through the work Saint Jerome has done to contribute to serving Christ is that Saint Jerome, along with the other saints, performed some kind of service under the guidance of God. I learn that Saint Jerome and all of the other saints were inspired by God to serve Him and serve others. They were inspired and called by God to do good deeds and to spread His Word. In addition, learning from this Saint gave me insight that mankind could be just like Saint Jerome. If we become motivated, inspired, and compelled to perform the service God wants us to do, we ourselves can become a saint, just like Saint Jerome. Learning the life of Saint Jerome revealed to me of just how capable I and others are in doing God’s deeds and becoming a saint, just like Saint Jerome.
